Primary Purpose of Position
The Appalachian State University Police Department promotes a safe and secure environment for learning, living, and working through a community-oriented policing philosophy. The department advances public safety by fostering partnerships, preventing and investigating crime, providing education and awareness programs, conducting proactive patrols, and maintaining a highly trained workforce. The department delivers comprehensive law enforcement and emergency response services and enforces state laws and university policies on a 24-hour basis.

Property Security Officers support the department's public safety mission by providing professional security services and patrol coverage across university properties. Through proactive monitoring, reporting safety and security concerns, and documenting violations of university policies, Property Security Officers help protect university assets, enhance campus safety, and serve as a visible security presence for the university community.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
License/Certification Required
Position requires a valid N.C. driver's license
Essential Job Functions

  • Secure and unlock designated campus buildings in accordance with established schedules, procedures, and departmental directives.
  • Conduct routine foot patrols of academic, administrative, residential, and other university facilities to promote safety and security, protect university property, and identify potential hazards or security concerns.
  • Perform vehicle patrols throughout university property, including campus roadways and parking lots, to deter criminal activity, monitor for safety concerns, and observe and report suspicious activity, policy violations, and maintenance issues to the on-duty Police Supervisor.
  • Respond to fire alarms, security alarms, and other building-related incidents as directed, conducting initial assessments and taking appropriate action in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Maintain a visible security presence and provide professional assistance, information, and customer service to students, employees, and visitors.
  • Observe, document, and report violations of university policies, unsafe conditions, and security concerns through established communication and reporting channels.
  • Serve in a primary assignment at the Belk Library and Information Commons, providing security patrol, monitoring facility conditions, responding to security-related concerns, and supporting a safe and welcoming environment for facility occupants and patrons.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Securing designated campus buildings based on closing schedules.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and coherently over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
  • Ability to recognize, identify, and report unusual, suspect, or hazardous activities or conditions across campus.
  • Understand basic protective and security practices.
  • Ability to perform physical functions that include working rotating shifts, walking on foot patrol, climbing stairs while physically checking doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secured.
  • Willingness to fill in occasionally to maintain security in Belk Library; monitor floors, ID Patrons, assist in removing patrons when necessary, monitor Technology desk, report problems to the evening library supervisor, assist AppState Police and Security as directed by that agency.

Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Security, Patrol, and Enforcement: Lock and unlock buildings following assigned schedules. Review the Event Tracker for specific building openings at the beginning of each shift. Patrol campus buildings and parking lots and report security violations. Provide money escorts when requested. Provide non-emergency medical transports when required. Do walking patrols in the interior of campus. Respond to routine Blue Light activations when dispatched. Conduct monthly Blue Light maintenance checks and submit report to supervisor. Complete weekly lights-out checks and submit to supervisor.

Communication: Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; by talking clearly on a mobile and handheld radio and by completing written reports. Respond to calls for service from community members on a regular basis and provide verbal responses to their requests. Explain policies to university community members and visitors when required. Demonstrate the ability to relate and interact with members of the department, university and community groups as required.

Technical Knowledge:
Demonstrate the ability to proerly use all assigned equipment. Be able to read and send messages using the university e-mail system. Understand the difference between violations of law and university policy violations and report each to the appropriate supervisor. Attend mandatory in-service training classes when required. Review university and department policies on a regular basis.

Physical Demands of Position
Driving a state vehicle in all types of weather. Walking in buildings, around campus, up and down hills and stairs, checking buildings and doors. Being alert at all times looking for security breaches. Using a mobile and handheld radio. Standing at a security post, inside and outside in all types of weather for up to 3-4 hours.
