Job Description:

The Detail Patrol Officer (Casual) provides a visible law-enforcement presence around the exterior perimeter of Alexandria City High School's Minnie Howard and King Street campuses. This position is staffed by off-duty Alexandria Police Department officers working an approved secondary-employment assignment. The officer patrols school grounds and parking areas to identify and respond to suspicious activity, fighting, and other safety concerns.

The Casual role supports Safety and Security Services in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff, and will report to the Director of Safety and Security, and the School Principal.

Qualifications:



  • Must be an active, sworn Alexandria Police Department officer in good standing.
  • Must be authorized by the Alexandria Police Department to perform secondary employment.
  • Must possess all certifications, training, equipment, and law-enforcement authority required by the Alexandria Police Department.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, APD policies, ACPS procedures, and school-based safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, staff, families, and members of the public.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond appropriately to developing or emergency situations.



Essential Functions:



  • Maintain a highly visible law-enforcement presence around the exterior perimeter of the assigned campus.
  • Conduct regular patrols of school grounds, parking areas, bus areas, athletic areas, exterior access points, and other designated locations.
  • Monitor for suspicious persons, vehicles, behavior, or activity that may present a safety or security concern.
  • Identify, deter, and respond to fighting, disorderly conduct, trespassing, unauthorized entry, and other unlawful or disruptive activity.
  • Help deter student elopement by monitoring campus boundaries and areas commonly used by students attempting to leave school grounds without authorization.
  • Intervene in criminal activity and emergencies consistent with applicable law, APD policies, training, and established ACPS procedures.
  • Request additional police, fire, emergency medical, or school-based resources when circumstances require additional assistance.
  • Maintain communication with Safety and Security Services, school administrators, School Resource Officers, and other assigned security personnel.
  • Document significant incidents, enforcement actions, suspicious activity, and other required information in accordance with APD and ACPS reporting requirements.
  • Preserve evidence, identify witnesses, and provide information necessary for follow-up investigations when appropriate.
  • Provide professional assistance and direction to students, staff, visitors, and community members while maintaining appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.



Compensation:



  • This casual role pays at an hourly rate of $70.00, please discuss more with the hiring supervisor.



Clearances:



  • Active Alexandria Police Department employment and good-standing status.
  • Alexandria Police Department approval for secondary employment.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
  • Public Health Compliance - Must follow safety and health protocols.
