Join our smart and dedicated team as we work to advance and operation energy systems and apply for our Operating Engineer A.

This position is responsible as the roving watch for the Southeast and Main Energy Plants. Making timely rounds on equipment and performing operational functions as needed for safe and reliable operations.

Minimum requirements to be successful in this role:

  • Three years of experience in a large, high pressure steam heating plant or in high pressure boiler operation.
  • Second Class B MN Boiler Engineer's license.
  • Demonstrate ability to coordinate operations and maintenance activities and set and achieve goals with a high degree of self-initiation and independence.
  • Ability to work well with others, to communicate clearly both orally and in writing and to direct and/or train others.
  • Familiarity with boiler and chiller equipment and their auxiliaries and with all types of maintenance work.
  • Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and plant controls applications.
  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics/blueprints.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in the operation of high-pressure boilers, turbine generators, gas turbine and chillers to provide steam, electricity and chilled water to the customer in a safe and efficient manner.
  1. Inspects, operates and adjusts pumps, turbines and equipment associated with safe plant operations.
  1. Performs boiler and water treatment analyses to ensure efficient plant operations. Makes adjustments as necessary.
  1. Performs major repairs and maintenance on boilers and auxiliary equipment to prevent shutdown and ensure proper operation in a safe and efficient manner.
  1. Performs cleaning and minor building maintenance to enhance a safe work environment.
  1. Trains and instructs new Operating Engineer A's to convey company policies and procedures.
  1. Removes fly ash from boilers and hoppers to ensure efficient operation of the boilers and to comply with environmental standards.
  1. Maintains coal bunker levels, chemical tank levels, and oil tank levels to ensure proper operation of the plant.
  1. Cleans coal handling systems and other areas as assigned on an ongoing basis to prevent safety and environmental hazards.

Secondary Job Functions

  1. Performs other operating functions as needed to ensure uninterrupted operation of the plant.
  1. Performs other related functions as assigned including, but not limited to, coal unloading.

Work Schedule

Dependent on assignment, work schedule may involve rotating shifts (8 or 12 hours) to include some weekends and holidays and/or straight days.

Overtime can be either voluntary or mandatory. Scheduled overtime is an element of the rotating shift assignment.

The employee is frequently required to climb ladders/ropes/scaffolding; far visual acuity of clarity of vision at 20 feet or more; fine manipulation of picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm as in gross manipulation; gross manipulation by seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hands; keyboarding; lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.; near vision acuity with clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less; peripheral vision by observing an area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point; pushing; pulling; reaching at/below shoulder level; reaching overhead by extending arms and hands in a 150 to 180 degrees vertical arc; and standing/walking.

The employee is occasionally required to the use of a respirator; crawling; couching; foot/leg controls; kneeling; sitting; stooping; and confined space with limited entry or exit.

Must be capable of maneuvering throughout industrial facilities such as energy plants and building HVAC mechanical rooms, etc.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position involves working in a steam, hot water, and/or chilled water plant and/or its distribution system. While performing job duties, employees may occasionally encounter potential hazards, including fumes, airborne particles, high-pressure steam in piping or equipment, both hot and cold temperatures, and hazards associated with moving machinery. The work environment's noise level typically ranges from moderate to loud. Other potential hazards common to heating and cooling plants may include confined spaces, slippery surfaces, rotating equipment, chemical handling (e.g., water treatment chemicals), and burns. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided and physical controls are in place as needed to mitigate these risks.

The hourly union rate for this position is $43.09, increasing to the full rate of $47.88 upon successful completion of the probationary period.

This is an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Union No. 160 position. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is also provided.
