About Department 498 -Columbia Weapons and Mechanical Systems

D498, COLUMBIA Weapons & Mechanical Systems, is responsible for the COLUMBIA Class Mechanical systems' design products, and supporting both vendor and shipyard construction of these systems. D498 works as a team with D453 Mechanical Design to complete Change Notices (CN's) to resolve design issues with Columbia Mechanical products. D498 also works closely with the Electric Boat shipyard to support construction of Mechanical systems on the Columbia Class submarines, and processes CN's to provide technical resolution of construction problems. D498 works with many different vendors who are building mechanical components and systems to provide technical oversight of these vendors and resolve technical problems that occur during vendor construction and testing of these components.

Role Overview

The person filling this role will be responsible for project-managing D498's CN work to support meeting department and company CN goals, while properly prioritizing CN work to support the needs of the shipyard and vendors. Depending on the applicant's skills and experience, this role may eventually be expanded to also serve other departments within the Columbia engineering organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Drive overall Mechanical organizational performance on CN's, both with Design and Engineering

• Represent Mechanical organization to senior management/executive staff as needed/requested to brief on CN performance

• Establish internal Mechanical goals to support overall company CN goals and track performance to these goals

• Chair regular (multiple times per week) meetings/telecons with Mechanical Engineers/Designers/Supervisors to status CN progress, identify roadblocks hindering progress, and identify discrete actions to complete CN's

• Provide CN organizational performance feedback to Mechanical workforce

• Stay informed and current on all company and Columbia Class submarine program policies and procedures for processing CN's

• Educate Mechanical workforce on latest CN process requirements and re-enforce compliance with these policies and procedures

• Work with Electric Boat Detail Planning organization to drive timely turnaround of Change Request revisions, and addition/removal of work order stoppages

• Work with Electric Boat Materials Management organization to ensure turnaround of CN reviews and part number updates supports organizational goals and shipyard needs

• In conjunction with Mechanical Engineering/Design, monitor newly created CN's to ensure that they are truly necessary, and determine if they are necessary to be implemented on the first Columbia Class submarine

• Ensure proper solution approaches are being employed for CN's

• Ensure CN's are properly prioritized to support shipyard and vendor needs

• Provide and monitor Mechanical Engineering and Design labor charging guidance for CN work (with assistance from other Program Representatives)

• Monitor and report performance against established program metrics

• Compile manager/supervisor level dashboards of discrete performance measures against organizational goals

• Chair status meeting with supervisors/managers to review product development and progressing

• Identify and implement process improvements to improve organizational performance on CN's

Required:

• Bachelor's Degree in Business, related field, or equivalent experience

• Ability to obtain Secret security clearance

• 2+ years of project/program management experience, or 2+ years of experience working with Electric Boat CN's

Preferred:

• Experience with Teamcenter
• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

• Active Secret clearance or higher

• Experience with planning business systems (PCM, artemis)

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to deal effectively with people at all levels, from individual contributors to the executive staff
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to work with limited oversight, set priorities and handle multiple tasks, exercise professional judgment/discretion in executing tasks
• Ability to work flexible hours and adapt priorities as required to support emergent issues/department needs, with the potential for periodic evening and weekend work
• Willingness to learn new methods, tools, and processes
