| Position Description: |
The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation's Coleman Lab (located on the Oakdale Research Campus in Coralville) is looking for a Postdoctoral researcher. The position is fully funded for 5 years and we anticipate a wide variety of collaborative opportunities both within the unparalleled research environment of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and with the broader University of Iowa community. This opportunity will be supervised by Dr. Mitch Coleman and the person hired for the job will be expected to independently pursue a variety of research-related objectives. Postdoctoral researchers in the lab are supported in their efforts to give presentations at national and international meetings as well as in pursuit of their own independent funding. The location of the Coleman lab at the Oakdale Research Campus also offers a variety of quality-of-life advantages for our group as well as easy access to close collaborators in the Research Campus and Medical Center North Liberty. Position duties include, but are not limited to: Utilize tissue culture, histological, biochemical, and other cell biological techniques to explore basic science questions predominant within the lab about systemic metabolism, mitochondrial metabolism, redox physiology, orthopedic pathology. Assist with day-to-day laboratory maintenance while creating a welcoming and supportive environment. Perform routine genotyping of mice, murine knee surgery, murine knee injections, murine sample preparation, and maintain transgenic mouse colonies including all standards of mouse husbandry in accordance with the Office of Animal Resources. Perform routine dissection of cow knees obtained from a local butcher, execute ex vivo modeling modulating cartilage metabolism and biochemical behavior including live cell confocal microscopy as well as fixed and frozen histological measures. Collaborate with external labs or other colleagues to apply novel biochemical and enzymatic techniques to explore joint physiology, particularly redox and mitochondrial pathophysiology associated with joint degeneration. Pursue independent hypotheses and disseminate the knowledge gained by composing and publishing high impact factor papers as a first author. Similarly, compose abstracts to conferences to further disseminate cutting edge science from our lab. Give presentations at national and international conferences. Pursue small-scale funding to support unique initiatives and your own career development. |
| Education Requirement: |
- PhD in biology or related discipline.

| Required Qualifications: |
- Functional knowledge of mitochondrial biology and murine modeling.
- Exceptional attention to detail and numerical accuracy.
- Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively with staff and other students.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Ability to learn, perform, and develop complex lab procedures.

- Previous laboratory experience.
