Transportation and Equipment Lead Technician (Mechanic)

DEFINITION
Under supervision of administrator the incumbent is in a lead position that is required to oversee shop and yard maintenance operations, perform technical diagnostic and repairs, review and schedule all shop activities. The incumbent values and promotes the mission and vision of the college.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
The position provides guidance to other technicians and directs all shop and yard activities. This position services, repairs, and maintains all automotive vehicles and power operated equipment. In addition to the mechanically skilled requirements, under minimal supervision the individual will monitor fueling stations and fueling of auxiliary equipment such as emergency generators.

1. Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical and electrical defects in district transportation and equipment such as but not limited to cars, trucks, diesel engines, generators, agriculture equipment, turf/grounds equipment, tractor implements, golf carts, man lifts, knuckle booms, small engines and trailers.
2. Performs maintenance and repairs to transportation and equipment at the Lompoc Valley Center (LVC) as needed.
3. Overhauls engines (gas or diesel), repair and replace transmissions and differentials, complete brake overhaul (including air brakes), service and repair hydraulic systems, service and repair air condition systems, mount and balance tires and repairs flat tire repairs.
4. Conducts safety inspections and performs tune-ups on vehicles and equipment.
5. Performs technical electrical diagnosis using scan tools, multi-meters and other related equipment.
6. Performs welding repairs and fabrication.
7. Develops and implements a preventative maintenance program for all vehicles and equipment.
8. Maintains accurate repair logs and updates equipment/vehicle status data.
9. Orders and purchases fuel, oil, parts and supplies, as required.
10. Obtains quotes and estimates for scope of work.
11. Oversees yard maintenance (equipment, storage, recycling of steel, waste, and disposal).
12. Oversees fueling stations and updates security coding and maintains fuel logs.
13. Complete monthly and annual inspections on fuel tanks, provide reports as needed.
14. Assign work orders within the scope of the position.
15. Facilitate transportation of vehicles to a California State agency for smog inspections, ensure all annual smog inspections are completed at both Santa Maria Campus and LVC.
16. Provide information and/or complete Annual Government Fleet Smog Check Program report.
17. Collaborates with facilities personnel and outside agencies in regards to: hazmat waste and environmental safety inspectors.
18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

• Automotive shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and potentially hazardous chemicals.
• Extreme temperatures.
• Duties are performed indoors and outdoors.
• Communicates with employees and vendors over the telephone, by videoconferencing, by email, and in person.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:

• Possession of a valid and appropriate California Class C driver's license and the ability to qualify for district vehicle insurance coverage;
• Forklift Operator Certificate within the first year of employment;
• Basic Welding Certificate within the first year of employment

• Heavy work requiring frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
• Standing and walking for prolonged periods.

The desired start date is November 2026. This is a full-time, 37-hour, classified, 12-month position.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., and Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
