2027 Summer Intern - Global Banking & Market Solutions (San Francisco, CA)

First Citizens Bank offers a highly competitive summer internship program designed to provide meaningful hands-on experience, professional development, and direct exposure to the financial markets. Interns work alongside experienced professionals on impactful projects that contribute to business objectives while building the foundational skills needed for a successful career in banking and financial services.

Within Global Banking & Market Solutions (GBMS), interns gain exposure to Foreign Exchange Sales & Trading, Interest Rate Risk Management, International Banking Solutions, and Trade Finance. This is a unique opportunity to learn how global markets function, how institutional clients manage financial risk, and how market professionals combine analytical rigor, technology, and commercial insight to deliver solutions.

We are seeking intellectually curious, analytically driven students with a strong interest in financial markets. Successful candidates will demonstrate both technical aptitude and a genuine desire to understand the economic and market forces that drive investment and risk management decisions.

A majority of time expected in office to maximize internship value with occasional work from home flexibility when necessary.

Duties & Responsibilities

As a GBMS Summer Intern, you will:

• Work closely with professionals across Foreign Exchange Sales & Trading, Interest Rate Derivatives, International Solutions, and Trade Finance.
• Gain firsthand exposure to a dynamic, client-facing, revenue-generating Markets business.
• Monitor market developments and economic events, developing an understanding of how global financial markets, interest rates, currencies, and geopolitical factors influence clients and markets.
• Analyze financial and market data to identify meaningful insights and communicate findings through clear, actionable presentations and reporting.
• Support research, analytics, strategic initiatives, process improvements, and technology-related projects that enhance business effectiveness.
• Assist in the preparation of client-facing materials, market commentary, and other business development resources.
• Help coordinate client events and engagement activities, including planning, logistics, communication, and follow-up.
• Collaborate with team members on projects requiring quantitative analysis, critical thinking, and problem solving.
• Participate in professional development, networking, and community service events throughout the internship program.
• Complete a project focused on solving a business challenge or improving a key process, culminating in a presentation to senior leaders and key stakeholders.
• Receive mentorship and guidance from dedicated managers and program leaders throughout the internship experience.

Required qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of experience
• Currently enrolled at an accredited collegiate institution (during the time of the summer program)
• Ability to work 40 hours per week during the duration of the program

Preferred Qualifications:

• Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in finance, Economics, Accounting, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics
• Strong interest in global financial markets, macroeconomics, foreign exchange, fixed income, and risk management.
• Excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working with data and performing quantitative analysis using tools such as Python, SQL, Excel VBA, or similar technologies.
• 3.0 minimum GPA
• Strong desire to learn and grow

If hired in California, the base pay for this position is generally between $18.89 and $30 per hour. Actual starting base pay will be determined based on skills, experience, location, and other non-discriminatory factors permitted by law. For some roles, total compensation may also include variable incentives, bonuses, benefits, and/or other awards as outlined in the offer of employment.
