ALA-accredited MLIS degree or equivalent advanced degree (Need to submit degree/official transcript by the first day of employment)- A doctorate degree, or ABD with completion date by Sept. 1, at the time of appointment in Library and Information Science, or a related field
- Online teaching experience at the graduate or undergraduate level

| Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Position Context
The Library and Information Science program at Appalachian State University prepares students to pursue careers in libraries or information fields. The Program has achieved Pre-Candidacy Accreditation status from the American Library Association (
ALA):
View Program retention and graduation data.The Master of Library and Information Science (
MLIS) is a 36-credit hour online degree program that prepares students to foster digital and information literacies, assist underserved populations, and bridge the gap between people, information, and technology. The program's curriculum has been developed and is reviewed annually to ensure that it enables students to successfully meet the program's Learning Objectives.

Core Position Responsibilities
- Teach graduate courses in Library and Information Science at the master's level, 18 credit hours, which corresponds to six courses during the academic year.
- Curriculum and course development, especially in areas of information science.
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and ongoing assessment of the MLIS programs.
- Advise and mentor graduate students.
- Engage in scholarly activity appropriate for tenure and promotion, including research, publication, and/or grant activity related to Library and Information Science.
- Contribute to accreditation, assessment, and continuous improvement efforts within the Library and Information Science Program.
- Participate in service through committee work, professional engagement, and community partnerships.
- Connect the program with emerging information professions.
- Collaborate with faculty across academic units on interdisciplinary teaching, research, and grant initiatives.
- Engage in an active program of scholarship and professional service to the MLIS Program, the Department, the University, and/or the public, including committee work as specified in the University's Faculty Handbook.

ABD with reduction in rank and salary:
ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since
ABD will not meet the minimum requirements,
ABD will not be considered. |
