Full Salary Range: The full salary range for this position is $25.43/hour - $31.60/hour. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Student Health is a full service on campus primary healthcare facility for UCSB students. We see students on both an appointment and walk in basis. Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the medical assistant provides medical and administrative support to the physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurses, and licensed vocational nurses.

The medical assistant will assist, perform or provide limited support for the following: exams, procedures, taking vitals, perform point-of-care lab testing, checking in/out patients, filling out necessary paperwork, taking phone/electronic messages and following directives from the clinicians. The medical assistant will also act as a medical chaperone.

The medical assistant will perform autoclave and laundry duties, and run errands as needed.

Required Qualifications

* High School diploma or equivalent.
* Current CPR certification/Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
* Licenses/Certifications: Certification with one of the following agencies*:

  • Master's American Association of Medical Assistants (AMA)
  • American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • California Certifying Board of Medical Assistants (CCBMA)
  • Local Emergency Medical Services Agency (LEMSA)
  • Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA)
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

*Note: Applicants without a proper certification will not be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years experience as a Medical Assistant in a high volume, fast paced medical practice.
  • Injection certified.

Special Conditions of Employment

* Mandated reporting requirements of Child Abuse and Adult Dependent Abuse.

* Student Health requires that clinical staff must successfully complete and pass the background check and credentialing process before the start date.

* To comply with Santa Barbara County Public Health Department Health Officer Order, this position must provide evidence of annual influenza vaccination, or wear a surgical mask while working in patient care areas during the influenza season.

* Per California Code of Regulations Title 8, Section 5199 Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standard requires; upon hire and annually thereafter Tuberculosis (TB) screening for all employees. The method of testing is determined by past medical history and any current symptoms.

* Per Cal/OSHA regulations and UCSB Campus Policy, all UCSB personnel who use respiratory protection equipment shall be included in the UCSB Respiratory Protection Program and required to complete respirator fit testing upon hire and annually thereafter, completed by UCSB Environmental Health & Safety.

* Work hours may include Thursday evenings from 10am-7pm.

* Any HIPAA or FERPA violation is subject to disciplinary action.

* Student Health is closed between the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

Assists Clinicians - 75%

* Greets patients, takes vital signs, and prepares patients for exams and special procedures.
* Assists clinicians during exams and special procedures.
* Fulfills clinician orders for conducting EKG exams, wound cleaning, dressing changes, fitting of a variety of orthopedic appliances, ear lavages, audiogram, nebulizer treatment, peak flow/spirometry.
* Responds appropriately in emergency situations as well as with distressed or emergency patients.
* Is a team member during the Mass Immunization Clinics at SHS.
* Administers oral or injectable medications and/or immunizations in the various clinics as needed.
* Performs as a chaperone when needed.
* Seeks Identifies and completes necessary paperwork accurately and completely.
* Obtains medical records and lab and X-ray results when needed.
* Restocks supplies, monitors and rotates expiring supplies and medications.
* Using universal precautions, cleans up patient emesis, blood, excreta, and body fluids.
* Perform point-of-care laboratory testing.
* Keeps areas neat, clean and orderly, maintaining a safe environment for patients and co-workers.
* Acquires necessary skills to maintain Autoclave functions and assists as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic.
* Acquires necessary skills to maintain Trophon functions and assists as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic.
* Assures accuracy of lab specimens and processing in a timely fashion, walks specimens to lab as needed.

Front Office Responsibilities - 20%

* Makes appointments and bills for service rendered via the computer system.
* Assists in providing other computer input as needed.
* Completes Medical Clearance documents as needed.
* May perform prior authorization, referrals, refills, and change appointment times as needed by the demands of the clinic.
* Answers general questions regarding SHS policies and procedures.

General Assistance - 5%

* Functions as a member of the clinic team assisting with back or front office duties as appropriate, such as, interacting with other units, running errands, etc.
* Acquires necessary skills to maintain the laundry functions and assists as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic.
