Position Summary

The Summer Day Camp Assistant supports the Camp Director, Corps officers and staff in daily operations of summer programs; assists with and monitors both classroom and outside activities for children; provides safe, clean environment; prepares and executes lesson plans for morning and afternoon activities; participates with children in field trips and activities and assists with meals for children as needed.

Essential Functions



  • Follow Instructions and directions with minimal staff supervision.
  • Monitor check-in and check-out times; demonstrate excellent telephone skills when needed.
  • Assist camp staff by passing out or collection materials; setting out and storing equipment as required; setting up rooms for special activities and restoring rooms to order following activities.
  • Assist in maintaining clean, orderly learning environment including necessary housekeeping duties.
  • Assist with children supervision in day camp setting as assigned.
  • Immediately report any potentially harmful situations to supervisor.
  • Remain available and ready for duty in assigned area during rotations.
  • Handle crisis and emergency situations appropriately and professionally.
  • Participate with children in group activities; assist in playground supervision, assist with meal/snack preparation and service.
  • Treat each child with dignity and respect; be sensitive and responsive to their needs at all times, be concerned for their safety and well-being.
  • Demonstrate proper clean-up methods; oversee children in clean-up activities.
  • Teach children responsibility for maintaining classroom equipment in good order.
  • Prepare presentations for talent show, showcase children's creative works.
  • Attend all in-service workshops and staff meetings.
  • Maintain professional attitude; demonstrate professional approach to problem solving.
  • Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Life and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Be able to sing and dance.


Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend squat climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift up to 50lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as file cabinet drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax, and telephone.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Minimum high school graduate of equivalent preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate well in English.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish helpful.
  • Must work well and relate well with people.
  • Must attend staff, child safety, and other trainings as directed.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



  • Knowledge of Salvation Army Programs.
  • Requires detail-oriented, self-starter and team player, with ability to work with and relate well to children, parents, and staff in mature and sensitive manner.
  • Must meet all health, safety, and criminal/fingerprint clearance regulations.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
  • Ability to access and produce information from computer; ability to use new software programs with basic training.
  • Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.
  • Have a philosophy of education and child development in sympathy with that of The Salvation Army and Summer Day Camp programs.
