The Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of injury prevention, community and professional outreach education, and program development activities. The Coordinator is responsible for the day to day management and support of all injury prevention activities, including strategic planning and identification of sources of funding for injury prevention related activities. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining relationships within the communities of the regional trauma center, acting as a liaison with local public health staff, community-based organizations, and government agencies.


Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement multifaceted injury prevention activities targeted for at-risk populations in catchment areas. Provide technical assistance, training, and consultation to local and state public health agencies, educators, community groups, task forces, and other health and safety professionals regarding injury prevention activities. Establishes criteria to monitor effectiveness and outcomes of injury prevention programs.
  • Disseminate injury prevention programs/materials through local and statewide networks to enhance public education and awareness about injury prevention. Coordinate requests by schools, community groups, EMS squads, traffic safety officers etc. to present various trauma prevention and trauma education programs.
  • Assist with the coordination and marketing of hospital trauma related conferences, special events, and educational meetings.
  • Oversee the alcohol screening of trauma patients. Provide monthly evaluation of CAGE assessment completion.
  • Participate in local, state, and regional groups and committees related to injury prevention. Remain current on injury prevention issues and methodology by participating in nationally accredited programs.
  • Seek, prepare, and submit appropriate grants; manages grants received and follow guidelines in a fiscally responsible manner to ensure fulfillment of all deliverables.
  • Utilize trauma registry data to identify the pattern, frequency, and risk for injury in the community. Monitor pattern of injury data and support efforts to improve data collection and evaluation activities. Present data at monthly meetings.
  • Represents Hackensack University Medical Center as the Injury Prevention Coordinator on the NJ State Trauma Council.
  • Coordinate ATLS courses in conjunction with the ATLS Director.
  • Work collaboratively with the Trauma/Surgical Critical Care and Injury Prevention Service to meet all JCAHO, NJDOH-OEM, AND ACS-COT regulations. Ensures that the program complies with the requirements of the American College of Surgeons Trauma Center designation.
  • Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes, and pulls a minimum of 10 lbs. and stands a minimum of 4 hours a day.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited program in nursing.
  • BSN in Nursing or degree/license in a healthcare field.
  • Clinical experience in critical care, trauma, and/or emergency nursing.
  • Computer proficiency in Google Applications
  • Maintains current knowledge related to adult and pediatric trauma/critical care, professional practice, and research.
  • Experience in public speaking and grant writing.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification.
  • Within one year of hire obtains ATLS coordinator designation
