Department:PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Organizational Unit:Roadway and Bridge (50000074) Position Type:Permanent Full Time/Part Time:Full Time Open Until Filled. $22.05 to $24.26 hourly. Actual salary negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Central Area/Cocoa. Work schedule is Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Performs skilled crafts and trades work in the operation and routine maintenance of complex heavy equipment used to maintain drainage systems, including ditch restoration, swale rehabilitation, and replacing culverts and drainage structures and may perform related manual labor. Employee may rotate among various pieces of equipment or may be permanently assigned to a specific piece of equipment. REQUIREMENTS: Two (2) years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment used in the construction and/or maintenance of roads and drainage systems; OR one (1) year of experience as a Brevard County Heavy Equipment Operator I PLUS completion of the Brevard County Mandatory Training for the Development of New Employees classes PLUS a current annual performance evaluation score of 4.0 or greater; OR successful completion of a six (6) month heavy equipment operator training program from an accredited school PLUS six (6) months of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment. Successful completion of coursework in heavy equipment operation at a post-secondary school may be substituted on a year for year basis for a maximum of one (1) year (1,080 class hours [one (1) school year] = one (1) year of experience; 120 class hours = one (1) month of experience. Additional qualifying education and/or experience may be substituted on a year for year basis. Experience leading crews in maintaining drainage systems, including ditch restoration, swale rehabilitation, and replacing culverts and drainage systems is preferred. Experience utilizing mobile devices is preferred.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess, or obtain prior to employment, a valid Florida Class A Commercial Driver's license and maintain said license during the term of employment. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to operate an Excavator (i.e. track hoe, backhoe, or a Kaiser Menzi Muck walking excavator) PLUS a Front-End Loader and pass a proficiency skills test. This is heavy physical work performed outdoors and involves exposure to dirt, dust, noise, odors and fumes, insects, working in and around traffic and moving machinery, and extreme weather conditions. In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
