Position Summary
The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.
Additional Details
The mission of UNCG's Office of Sustainability is to encourage and support the development and implementation of sustainable practices in administrative units of the university and create a meaningful link between academics and operations that supports use of the campus as a teaching laboratory.

The Office of Sustainability Graduate Assistant (Masters or Doctoral) will support recruitment for and coordination of the Office's Eco-Reps program, a peer-to-peer (students teaching students) campus outreach and education program consisting of student volunteers who support the Office in the dissemination of environmental stewardship concepts and campus sustainability programs. UNCG's Eco-Reps are trained on proper recycling practices meant to reduce waste-stream contamination and increase UNCG's landfill diversion rate as the university strives to become zero waste by 2050. Eco-Reps also encourage student residents to participate in the Green Room certification program, which provides students with tips for living an eco-friendly lifestyle, which in turn helps UNCG reduce its carbon footprint.

The GA will also assist with digital communications (newsletter, social media, website updates, calendars, etc.) and coordinate with student environmental clubs to increase their membership and support their programs.
The GA will also attend UNCG Sustainability Council meetings and serve on the UNCG Green Fund Committee, a campus-based grant program that offers education, research, and professional development opportunities for students and employees by investing in campus infrastructure and programming to help meet the goals of the UNCG Climate Action Plan.
Applicants should be comfortable speaking in public and have a passion for protecting the environment and for community building. You'll need an attention for detail when managing the calendar of events and tracking data in Excel spreadsheets and some basic knowledge of website management ( HTML) and of social media (Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter) best practices. Some experience with graphic design (Adobe, Canva, etc.) would be helpful, but is not required.
Compensation is $7,000 per academic year ($3,500) a semester for 10 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters (no winter or summer work). The Office is open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., plus additional evening and weekend hours depending on events. A majority of the work will be conducted in the Office of Sustainability and on campus, but arrangements can be made for some to be conducted remotely. Flexible work schedule, but the expectation is availability of at least 3 days a week.
