Position Summary
Physical Therapy Assistant works under the direct supervision of a Physical Therapist to provide appropriate functional and clinical treatments for assigned patients in a supervised program of rehabilitation.
Job Responsibilities
- Patient preparation for Physical Therapy Treatment - Maintains patient safety and comfort by responding to their needs and following procedural and safety guidelines. Monitors the patients personal care and environment constantly, assist the patient carefully with bowel and bladder care. Utilizes the appropriate supplies and equipment in relation to the type of treatment being administered following departmental safety guidelines. Transports the patient when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Preventive and Supportive Care - Correctly positions the patient. Performs physiological passive range of motion according to established procedures. Uses splints, sandbags, pillows, hiprolls, and sheepskin appropriately when required.
- Maintenance of supplies, equipment, and assistive devices - Monitors the level of supplies and notifies the supervisor when additional supplies are needed. Cares for equipment (all PT modalities) appropriately. Recommends replacement of equipment to the supervisor. Maintains cleanliness and order in all areas of the unit. Applies and removes devices, bandages, and dressings carefully and properly according to standard clinical procedures. Makes simple devices and equipment when required ( ie: built up footwear, sandbags, home pulleys, etc.
- Assists in the administration of testing procedures. Assembles tools and supplies which are needed for the particular test or procedures, properly. Prepares the patient according to instructions of the Physical Therapist. Follows directions related to recording and positioning of the patient. Anticipates sequences in the testing or treatment procedures.
- Involvement in Clinical Education within the Physical Therapy Department - Works with PTA students as a Clinical Instructor. Works with Physical Therapy Students during their affiliations in coordination with the Clinical Instructor guidance.
- Documentation of all patient care related activities under the direct supervision of a Physical Therapist - Reports the patients responses to treatment as well as other observations verbally and in writing. Takes and reports the patients vital signs accurately. Performs clerical and reception activities as required. Attends and participates in staff meetings as assigned.
- Application of Therapeutic Exercises and Functional Activities - Instructs the patient carefully and properly in predetermined exercises in accordance with physical therapy standards of practice and safety guidelines. Instructs the patient carefully and properly in ambulation and elevation skills in accordance with physical therapy standards of practice and safety guidelines. Instructs the patient carefully and properly in activities of daily living in accordance with physical therapy standards of practice and safety guidelines. Trains the patient for the length of time specified in the patients program which is predetermined by the Registered Physical Therapists.
- Application of Cold and/or Heat Modalities - Applies and removes the modality correctly. Applies the modality in accordance with the length of time specified by the Physical Therapists instructions. Follows established departmental procedures and takes safety precautions in the use and application of the various modalities.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree from an approved Physical Therapy Assistant Program plus certification by New York State as a Physical Therapy Assistant required; Excellent communication skills. BLS certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) OR Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional course work related to the practice of Physical Therapy. Clinical experience preferred in all areas of principal responsibilities.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $40.00 - $40.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
