Essential Job Duties |
This is a highly skilled worker with a proficiency in plumbing installation, repair, maintenance, and pipe fitting, along with a working knowledge of secondary electrical systems and equipment generally falling under the heading of
HVAC.
Work is performed on all related plumbing and piping systems to include but are not limited to potable water, non-potable water, domestic waste drainage systems, lab and acid waste drainage systems, building sewers, heating hot water piping systems, steam piping systems, chilled water piping, compressed air piping, natural gas piping, and all associated fixtures, equipment and appurtenances of systems to be maintained. |
Other Responsibilities |
- Must participate in quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks.
- Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Diagnose/troubleshoot/repair plumbing systems, boilers, fan turbines, pumps, condensate receivers, steam lines, expansion joints, strainers, pressure reducing stations, piping insulation air compressors, water softeners and other equipment for generating/controlling steam which requires pipe fitting and other skills.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Federal and North Carolina safety policies and procedures. OSHA safety plans, Facilities Operations Policy #901 and the employee safety manual; notices when dangers exist and can address them safely, proper training and PPE usage.
- Open communication with customers and awareness of importance of critical systems/equipment operations necessary to maintain classroom environment, research facilities and administrative areas with minimal unscheduled downtime and inconvenience.
- Demonstrates a solid working knowledge of correct system operations for plumbing, electrical and HVAC trades. Demonstrates a working knowledge of routine repairs in the assigned trades and related tools. Demonstrates proper procedures to isolate and lock-out systems for which responsible. Cross train in all building equipment operating systems.
- Must be proficient in assessing issues and recommending solutions in the assigned trades of plumbing, electrical and HVAC. Work to increase knowledge of relevant trades through on the job training and classes and demonstrate a team maintenance approach. Must demonstrate the ability to address concerns in a timely and appropriate manner.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Three to five years of experience in the plumbing trade with a secondary trades set in electrical and HVAC.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Vocation or technical school.
- NC Plumbing license or reciprocal or local jurisdiction Journeyman Plumber Certification.
CFC Certification.
