Project Manager - Electrical Engineering

RK&K has an exciting Electrical Engineering Project Management/Leadership opportunity for a licensed professional engineer with extensive experience in the study, evaluation, design, construction management, commissioning, start-up and troubleshooting of electrical and instrumentation and control systems for water and wastewater treatment facilities and pumping stations.

This position will preferably be assigned to one of our Southeastern Virginia offices (Newport News, Virginia Beach, or Richmond) to help implement cutting-edge technology advancements in municipal and commercial utility systems for clients in Southeastern and Central Virginia, Eastern North Carolina and beyond. Successful candidate will coordinate and collaborate with electrical engineering personnel throughout the firm ensuring responsive delivery and creative solutions.

Essential Functions



  • Lead E/I&C projects including collaborate with process disciplinary engineering design professionals in developing functional requirements and teams,
  • Design, size, select, and specify electrical and instrumentation and control equipment for water and wastewater projects
  • Conduct technical evaluations to support planning and design related to electrical systems and instrumentation and control systems
  • Prepare and review technical memoranda, proposals, reports, drawings, specifications, and miscellaneous contract documents
  • Direct and assist with the development of project staff and subconsultants
  • Facilitate internal and client meetings, presentations, and approval of plans
  • Support field services and investigations when required
  • Facilitate construction administration and engineering services (submittal review, contract document interpretation, requests for information, correspondence, change requests and change orders) when required
  • Prepare documentation and support startup and commissioning of new facilities
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate with clients, utility owners, project teams including other disciplines, such as architects, process mechanical, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical designers, cost estimators, GIS technicians, and other utility design professionals
  • Prepare detailed engineering cost estimates
  • Availability for limited travel of primarily short duration


Required Skills and Experience



  • Demonstrated experience with the design, construction and start-up of electrical power systems, and instrumentation and control (I&C) systems, including low voltage and medium voltage power distribution systems, standby emergency generators, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, control panels, instrumentation, PLC systems, and SCADA Systems
  • Experience with lighting design
  • Experience preparing electrical and I&C drawings and specifications
  • Experience preparing P&IDs
  • Proficiency with SCADA systems including PLCs, HMI software, servers, and workstations
  • Ability to program PLCs including Allen-Bradley CompactLogix and ControlLogix PLCs and Modicon PLCs.
  • Ability to program HMI software and integrate it with PLC Systems
  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical building codes
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in organization and presentation of documentation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite including Word, Outlook, Project, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field
  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) License
  • Ten (10) or more years of increasingly responsible, project experience in the study, design, and construction administration of electrical systems and instrumentation and control systems for water and wastewater pumping and treatment facilities.
  • A self-starter, versatile and interested in working on a variety of projects supporting our Water and Wastewater Group
  • Ability to work with others to solve complex electrical and instrumentation and controls system challenges
