Job Description

Supervises the personnel and active role in operational activities of a large research laboratory.

  • Works within and helps establish standardized procedures and practices to achieve objectives and meet deadlines relative to research execution safely. Must be able to make decisions related to prioritizing research projects for the limited facilities space and equipment on a day-to-day basis, and give input on larger scale and timeframes.
  • Must be able to schedule and manage work orders, prioritizing jobs as they are received from multiple sources.
  • Manage the machinist shop. Machine various common and exotic materials, including stainless steel, copper, nickel, kovar, titanium, molybdenum, carbon, glass, and ceramics into components and parts; using metal lathes, drill press, CNC milling machine and various hand and power tools.
  • Performs a variety of specialized or complex procedures, such as research apparatus design and fabrication, and makes recommendations for improvement/efficiency, as necessary. Integrate the technical needs of faculty proposed research plans, with the physical limitations of the facilities and capabilities of our students, while maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
  • Prepares any report of work performed by the machinist shop. Prepare materials lists for project billing to present to the researcher for funding code before purchasing materials. Provide project costs to researchers on prospective proposals.
  • Exchanges straightforward information, asks questions, and checks for understanding. Discusses new projects with faculty and senior research personnel to determine what needs to be done and what purchases need to be made in apparatus design, fabrication and use.
  • Researches and analyzes information and uses standard practices to make informed judgments and recommendations for research execution and facilities utilization. Discuss projects with faculty to determine how to design and create research equipment and apparatus for each experiment. Provide input on how design may be improved for function, efficiency, and safety.
  • Performs routine analytical assignments using existing procedures in lab operations, instrument operations and calibrations, and
  • Coordinates external projects with other departments and with off-campus collaborators.
  • Prepares studies and reports that assist senior level associates. Discuss the goals of research projects with faculty and students to impact experimental design.
  • Assists in the coordination of quality control procedures within the research function
  • Uses existing procedures to solve standard problems
  • Has leadership impact and performance impact on technician work team
  • Develops working relationships with internal parties and may work with external parties, as needed. Prepare for departmental visits in setting up and presenting a staff presence and showing technical competencies. Must be able to help further advance the wide variety of different types of research that are covered in the department.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Machine Tool operations or similar field.
  • Must be highly skilled in operating manual machine shop equipment (CNC and milling machines, lathes, surface grinder, etc.).
  • Work with tolerances as tight as +/-.0002.
  • Be proficient at Mig, Tig , Arc and gas welding.
  • Experience supervising multiple staff.
  • Able to work with a wide variety of materials-wood, plastic, glass, ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • A minimum of 10 years machining experience.
    Experience with concrete mix use, formwork, and related.
  • Ability to work well with and train students and assist in oversight of their safety.
