TOOLMAKER (STARSHIP)

In this role you will work as part of an elite team building and improving the mechanical systems and tooling operations at our Starship manufacturing and launch facilities. You will directly contribute to the success of the Starship program and all test flights and missions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Use in-depth familiarity of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to interpret blueprints at all assembly levels
  • Creatively assemble and fabricate support equipment ranging from shelves to large machine structures
  • Apply an in-depth knowledge of rigging large, heavy, and imbalanced components using overhead cranes, gantries, mobile cranes, and other lifting devices
  • Maintain all components in optimal condition during the assembly and disassembly
  • Translate metrology data from inspection reports to final machined surfaces
  • Perform spur-of-the-moment modifications to solve unpredictable field problems
  • Perform manual milling and turning operations as needed for project build
  • Apply creative solutions through the use of our growing fleet of field machining equipment
  • Ensure operations can be performed safely while meeting SpaceX quality standards
  • Maintain an orderly environment that retains maximum utility for all team members


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:



  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 1+ year of professional experience working in one or more of the following areas: Toolmaker, millwright, mechanic, boilermaker, machinist


PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:



  • Experience with millwright operations
  • Experience in metrology, machining, welding technology, or tooling
  • Completion of an accredited skilled trade apprenticeship program
  • Experience with weld fabrication and able to pass a welding skills test for cutting, fitting, stick, TiG, and MiG on semi-exotic materials
  • Understanding of the manufacturing process of large structures from concept to completion
  • Ability to visualize 3-D space and integrate complex geometries on both large and small fabrications
  • Ability to manually inspect components using conventional inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, and height gauges
  • Ability to apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) with discretion relative to the assembly's function
  • Ability to pass a machining skill test
  • Ability to use and learn a variety of software to observe, analyze, evaluate, and communicate pertinent information
  • Demonstrated leadership, dependability, and craftsmanship
  • Ability to adapt to an extremely dynamic work environment while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Ability to find solutions to problems using critical thinking and able to draw upon previous mechanical expertise
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of safety on the jobsite and bring new ideas of how to continue to work safely and effectively in new locations and changing environments


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends based on the operational needs of the business
  • Ability to work off-shift hours on a rotational or permanent basis
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. unassisted, stoop, bend, crawl, walk, maneuver in tight spaces, and stand for extended periods
  • Ability to work at elevated heights
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments - heat, cold, rain


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Toolmaker/Level 1: $23.00/hour
Toolmaker/Level 2: $28.00/hour
Toolmaker/Level 3: $33.00/hour

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
