ABOUT UT SOUTHWESTERN MEDICAL CENTER

ABOUT TRANSPLANT SERVICES CENTER

Transplant Services Center (TSC) is a Center within UT Southwestern Medical Center that functions as a full-service eye and tissue bank to "Complete the Circle of Care" between donation and transplantation. TSC has been providing eye and tissue donor recovery, processing, and allograft distribution services in North Texas since 1972. TSC is accredited by both the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) and the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA). TSC is the longest continually accredited eye and tissue bank in Texas.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical Supervisor works under minimal supervision to ensure smooth and efficient operation of the technical functions of the Center. The Technical Supervisor also assists with business development through development and maintenance of strategic relationships with key partners in donation and transplantation.


EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
REQUIRED

  • Completion of two (2) years of college to include at least six (6) hours in basic science, five (5) years related transplant experience, and certification as appropriate to degree or completion of training;
  • OR High School graduation or GED, completion of LVN, ORT, Mortician, or MLT program, five (5) years related transplant experience, and certification as appropriate to degree or completion of training.


PREFERRED

  • Bachelor's degree in science with emphasis in biology,
  • Five (5) to eight (8) years progressively responsible experience in eye and/or tissue banking
  • Two (2) years in supervisory capacity.
  • Certification as a tissue bank specialist (CTBS) and/or eye bank technician (CEBT).


JOB DUTIES

  • Assumes responsibility for and directs all ongoing special projects. Coordinates duties and schedules of personnel within transplant technical department to ensure smooth and efficient operation.
  • Engages in or supervises transplant technicians/coordinators engaged in preparing donor areas using aseptic techniques, surgically retrieving whole eyes/corneas, skin, bone/connective tissue, and cardiovascular tissue, performing cosmetic reconstruction, processing harvested material and preparing for storage and packaging, and maintaining sterility of instruments.
  • For purposes of quality control, reviews or obtains heart blood or venous samples from each donor cadaver to ensure absence of venereal disease, hepatitis, or other infections, cultures of donor tissue to determine presence or absence of bacterial contamination, matches donor tissue to prospective recipient,
  • Performs astute physical assessment of donor body. Reviews medical history or chart information; determines suitability of donors. Contacts donor families to obtain donation consents. Determines types and methods of procurement based on existing need and donor recipient matching as appropriate.
  • Evaluates most complex tissue using instrumentation and quality control procedures requiring highly developed level of expertise to rate tissue for distribution.
  • Oversees allocation of supplies, materials, and equipment; maintains adequate inventory. Assists in staffing decisions; supervises, trains, and evaluates technical personnel; maintains records.
  • Reviews and participates in related regulatory compliance and accreditation requirements. Assists in development and implementation of tissue transplantation programs.
  • Assists with budget preparations, contract negotiations, physician and donor family interactions, community relations with management teams from hospitals, other transplant facilities, and funeral homes; coordinates press relations and education programs to promote awareness of tissue donation.
