The YMCA is hiring a Computer Lab Attendant/ Digital Navigator for the South Side YMCA!

Under the direct supervision of Community Hub leadership and in collaboration with the Vice President, Community Innovation and Impact, the Digital Navigator is responsible for providing excellent customer service and technical support to lab visitors as well as monitoring computer lab usage to ensure that policies are followed by visitors. Hub-based computer labs are open to the public and serve community members. Some community members who visit may be looking to gain new computer skills or learn how to complete specific tasks on the computer. Computer labs are a part of broader digital inclusion efforts undertaken by the Y and other stakeholders in the Chicago area as a part of the association's Digital Equity portfolio. The aim of these digital inclusion efforts is to ensure that all Chicagoans have the means and skills to engage with digital resources that support their well-being. This position is fully grant funded, and as such, employment in this role is contingent upon the Y's receipt of grant funding to continue computer lab operations.

Starting salary: $17.50 per hour, looking for help from Monday - Friday from 3-7pm

Scope of Responsibility:



  • Monitor computer lab usage to ensure policies are followed
  • Keep track of the number of visitors using the lab for grant reporting
  • Respond quickly to inquiries from lab visitors about computer usage, connecting visitors to the Y's
  • Community Help Desk when more advanced technical assistance is needed
  • Provide technical support to computer lab visitors in accessing online digital skills assessments and
    lessons offered through the Northstar and Coursera Online Learning systems
  • Proctor Northstar digital skills assessments when lab visitors have an interest in earning official
    Northstar certifications
  • When possible, provide opportunities for visitors to develop technical skills and knowledge.
  • Complete Northstar digital skills assessments and online learning to familiarize oneself with the
  • Northstar system and potentially build one's own digital skills
  • Assist with outreach efforts to increase community awareness about the lab and other resources
    supporting digital learning

Requirements:



  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalency
  • Strong drive to provide excellent customer service and experience
  • Proficiency in tech such as Microsoft, Google, and Apple products and basic computer skills.

  • Comfortable with networking and doing outreach and awareness advocacy for the Tech Hubs.


  • Open/willing to learn in hosting workshops and building digital literacy curriculum.


  • Willing to learn to input impact data for grant purposes.


  • Looking for an individual that is enthusiastic, self-disciplined, and take initiatives in leading.

  • Positive and helpful attitude, with an interest in supporting digital inclusion for underserved communities
  • Excellent verbal communication and customer service skills
  • General awareness of Microsoft operating system and internet browser navigation.
  • Knowledge of common software/applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite a plus. Digital skills training will be available.
  • Resourcefulness and quick-thinking nature to troubleshoot technical and customer service issues as they arise
  • Interest in working in a team environment and ability to work independently
  • Motivated and enthusiastic learner
  • Must maintain confidentiality of client information
  • Ability to travel throughout the Chicagoland area


Child Abuse Prevention - Supports the YMCA's commitment to child abuse prevention by:



  • Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor
  • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
  • Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
  • Completing all child abuse prevention training as required
