Description of the Department or Unit |
The Department of Sustainable Technology & the Build Environment (
STBE) houses three academic programs: the BS in Sustainable Technology; the BS in Building Sciences, with three concentrations; and the MS in Technology, with two concentrations. The Department includes 35 full-time faculty serving approximately 900 undergraduate and 20 graduate students.
STBE has played an integral role in building the University's sustainability agenda, which features prominently in the University's Strategic Plan.
Within
STBE, faculty exemplify a commitment to applied research and interdisciplinary, experiential learning. Our students have achieved notable successes in national and international competitions such as the Formula Sun Grand Prix and American Solar Challenge, the
USDOE Race to Zero and Solar Decathlon, Solar Decathlon Europe, and the US
EPA P3 program, among others.
The Building Sciences Program is structured to establish a broad set of foundational skills and knowledge related to the whole life cycle of the built environment, including design, construction, and operations. This foundation acts as a catalyst for growth and success in our graduates' careers. Extending beyond foundational principles, the program is committed to priming students' minds to deconstruct, organize, and solve a wide range of problems related to the built environment in a team-based setting. Students go on to career paths in architecture, construction, building performance assessment, and facilities management. |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Building Sciences program, which may include but are not limited to: Construction Management Techniques and Engineering, Sustainable Building Design and Construction, Integrative Design Experiences (
IDEX), Building Science, Virtual Design and Construction, and Construction Education.
Other responsibilities include maintaining an active scholarly agenda, team-based coordination of building sciences integrated courses, advising students, collaborating with professionals in the building industry, and participating in service work. |
