Job Description

The Paralegal assists in-house counsel with internal claims management. The Paralegal also provides litigation support to in-house counsel including preparing releases and settlement agreements, gathering and organizing information in response to discovery requests for medical malpractice claims, drafting and revising correspondence, and managing the litigation calendar and deadlines. The position also supports in-house counsel with Baptist Health Care's informal claims resolution process to include, where appropriate, communicating and working directly with patients and families to reach resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Meets with in house counsel, outside counsel, and other professionals to discuss open claims and projects.
  • Drafts and revises correspondence to patients, families, and other professionals.
  • Communicates information from in house counsel to patients and families, where appropriate, to assist with resolution of claims.
  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains internal claim files which may include correspondence from outside counsel or other professionals, pleadings, discovery, or other legal documents.
  • Tracks bill adjustments and expenses related to the CANDOR program, risk write-offs, settlements and other related expenses.
  • Provides litigation support for in-house counsel.
  • Drafts and revises settlement agreements and other legal documents.
  • Assists with legal and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Gathers and organizes documents for litigation purposes and in response to legal discovery requests.
  • Manages litigation deadlines, facilitates communication and correspondence with outside counsel.


Qualifications

  • Minimum Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required

Minimum Work Experience

  • 5 years Experience working in a law office as litigation support or paralegal, preferably in the medical malpractice field Required and
  • 5 years Experience drafting, revising, and finalizing correspondence and other written documents Required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Recognized paralegal certification Upon Hire Required or
  • 4 years of related experience in lieu of the paralegal certification Upon Hire Required

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient at synthesizing and summarizing clinical information, both verbal and written in both written and verbal format.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to de-escalate and problem solve.
  • Organizational and analytical skills.
