Description

Position Purpose

Under general direction of the Institute for Biomolecular Targeting (BioMT), oversees operations and strategic development of the Molecular Tools Core (MTC) and Molecular Interactions & Imaging Core (MIIC) Facilities. Works collaboratively with faculty, scientists, and graduate students from across the Dartmouth community to ensure visibility, uptake, and delivery of outstanding research services, implement innovative solutions to support research projects, and introduce new offerings to meet emerging equipment and service needs. Partners with administrative director to advance key program and grant initiatives, including extramural funding applications.

Key Accoutabilites

Research



  • Provide oversight and mentorship to the team for the development, validation, and implementation of new technologies and methodologies.
  • Collaborate with researchers providing expert consultation and experimental advice to support design, execution, and interpretation of data.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and correct or recommend solutions to problems associated with experimental design, procedures, equipment, and facilities.
  • Stay abreast of trends/advancement in technologies and implement relevant innovations to enhance core capabilities.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports and presentations for clients and collaborators. Presents at meetings.
  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts by drafting portions of the text, preparing graphs, tables, and charts, etc. as needed.
  • Coordinate and oversee training in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques to multiple levels of scientific investigators (graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, staff scientists and faculty).


Administration



  • Assist leadership with strategic planning for operations and infrastructure.
  • Hiring and managing of personnel.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, and collaborators, ensuring their needs are met and exceeded.
  • Promote awareness and utilization of services through scientific events, seminars, workshops, teaching, open houses/socials, posters, online directories, and websites.
  • Contribute to grant proposals and write annual progress reports to funding agencies.
  • Assess customer satisfaction and engage user communities.
  • Collaborate with administrative partners to support financial sustainability of the Institute, including support and annual updates for cost-recovery models and chargeback rates for core services.
  • Oversee ordering, billing, and other administrative tasks.


Facilities Operations



  • Manage multiple research projects and coordinates with staff scientists to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the core facility, maintaining high standards of service quality and reliability.
  • Assess emerging technologies to meet research mission.
  • Oversee team members to ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards, the maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality-assurance and quality-control metrics, the performance of day-to-day laboratory tasks, and purchase and set up of new equipment.
  • Work with administrative partners to keep records on laboratory activities for grant and other reporting requirements.


Communication



  • Organize meetings among project participants to communicate MTC & MIIC specific services that will assist bioMT projects.
  • Work cooperatively with directors and investigators of bioMT.
  • Actively communicates with sales and service representatives.
  • Maintain flexible schedule to meet competing demands.


Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required

Experience



  • Four years of relevant research experience or the equivalent working in a laboratory is highly desirable.


Education



  • PhD or equivalent experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, bioengineering, or related field is required.


Skills & Knowledge



  • Strong knowledge & expertise in one or more core services areas (e.g., recombinant protein production, protein biochemistry, imaging).
  • Ability to take initative and collaborate effectively.

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn, develop, and apply new techniques.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Willingness to work with hazardous materials including biological agents and/or hazardous chemicals.



Preferred

Education



  • Three years of postdoctoral research (academic or industry based).


Experience



  • Proven leadership and management skills with some experience supervising scientific teams.
  • Teaching experience.

  • Ability to inspire and lead a team of scientific professionals.
  • Strategic approach to the deployment of core resources.
  • Skills in the delivery of practical and theoretical training.
