The University of Georgia is one of the leading public research universities in the nation and the world. In addition to engineering, UGA maintains outstanding academic programs in the arts and humanities, agricultural and environmental sciences, forestry and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, health and life sciences, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences, journalism and communication, public and international affairs, education, and professional programs that include business, law, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. Its research and academic strengths are matched by an enduring commitment to technology transfer, as evidenced by UGA's national leadership in intellectual property creation and the number of products created by companies based on UGA licenses. Recently, major investments in research have led UGA to international leadership in areas such as infectious diseases, data science and artificial intelligence, vaccine development, glycoscience, precision agriculture, human trafficking prevention, resilience and environment, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, innovation and entrepreneurship, and many others. In In February 2024, the Board of Regents of the University System Georgia approved a resolution authorizing the University of Georgia to establish an independent School of Medicine, which will further expand the university's academic program offering and create opportunities to grow funded research. About the College/Unit/Department
Founded in 2012, the College of Engineering was established to develop a premier engineering program in a comprehensive, land-grant university, meet growing student demand for additional in-state enrollment opportunities, meet the need for engineering and technical talents, increase the economic impact of the University of Georgia, and increase the breadth of scholarship at UGA. The College is comprised of four interdisciplinary schools: The School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering, the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, and Mechanical Engineering, and the School of Computing. The School of Computing, which is managed jointly with the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, was created in 2022 when UGA elevated the longstanding department of computer science and stemmed from the work of a seven-member Task Force on the Future of Computing.
Today, the College of Engineering is home to over 120 faculty involved in active research, outreach and the instruction of over 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a wide range of BS, MS, and PhD degree programs. The College has increased research funding over 300% in the last five years and boasted $26.7 million dollars in research expenditures in FY2024. The College includes six centers and institutes, including the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems, New Materials Institute, and Engineering Education Transformations Institute ( EETI). EETI is a nationally recognized integrated unit that builds shared capacity for scholarship of teaching and learning for faculty, staff, and students across the four Schools. Further, College faculty lead the Georgia Network for Electric Mobility, an innovative consortium of universities, government agencies, and leading industry partners working to advance research and development in electric mobility innovation in the state of Georgia and beyond.
