This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Conducts daily observations, treatments and diagnostic procedures for a variety of laboratory animal species to provide high quality animal care
  • Works well independently and with others to efficiently handle multiple priorities in a variety of areas. Plans the orderly direction of work, effectively establishes priorities, efficiently implements and performs procedures in support of colony health programs and investigator research
  • Conducts animal health procedures (e.g. injections, IV catheterization, bandaging) with skill and proficiency in a variety of laboratory animal species to ensure the health of the research animal colony
  • Performs routine and more complicated procedures (e.g. anesthesia, radiology, dosing, sampling) with proficiency to provide quality animal care and in support of research
  • Coordinates and performs quarantine and preventative programs (e.g. vaccinations, tuberculosis testing, blood collection, rodent pathogen testing) in laboratory animals with proficiency
  • Responsible for accurate documentation of clinical cases, anesthetic procedures and other animal-related information that meets requirements for quality veterinary care and regulatory agencies (e.g. USDA, FDA, DEA). Appropriately manages documentation (e.g. enters data in a timely manner, archiving)
  • Serves as a liaison between the veterinarians and scientists: notification of animal health concerns in a timely manner, coordinates schedules of preventative programs for research animals with scientists and veterinary staff
  • Participates in managing the non-human primate (NHP) colony
  • Conducts behavioral assessments and makes decisions regarding socialization and enrichment plans for NHPs under the direction of the behavioral specialist
  • Assists in assessment of critical cases and pain management of the animal colonies. Assists in making recommendations on more complicated health issues (e.g. post-operative care of new animal models, critical care patients)
  • Provides training and consultation to LASG staff, investigators and others in areas of expertise. Coordinates hands-on training programs in laboratory animals (e.g. handling, dosing, injections, euthanasia, blood collection, anesthesia) for investigators and LASG staff
  • Coordinates and manages the rodent colony health monitoring program as needed. Proficient at performing tasks related to this program (anesthesia, blood collection, necropsies). Coordinates scheduling of tasks, ensures sentinel inventories are managed appropriately, trains personnel to perform these tasks as needed. Assists in evaluating results and communicates salient health report information appropriately and in a timely manner
  • Stocks and maintains areas of responsibility in an organized and "hospital clean" state that meets or exceeds regulatory requirements
  • Complies with applicable written procedures such as LASG SOPs, LASG policies and R&D safety policies
  • Proficient at basic computer skills necessary for the role
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment appropriately and conducts themselves in a manner to afford protection against work-related hazards. Attends mandated safety training sponsored by GSK
  • Assists in coordination and development of environmental enrichment and socialization programs in a variety of laboratory animal species as needed

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Associate degree in Veterinary technology or bachelor's degree in science and related fields.
  • 2+ years' experience working as a veterinary technologist.
Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Certification as an Animal Health Technician or AALAS LATg preferred
  • Good clinical veterinary skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good organizational and teamworking skills
  • Experience in a research setting or pharmaceutical company preferred
  • Knowledge of regulations relevant to laboratory animals preferred
