Architectural Historian

Key Role:

Develop, implement, and oversee cultural resources management and Section 106 consultation in support of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) for federal government clients, apply advanced consulting skills, extensive technical expertise, and full industry knowledge, and develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Possess professional architectural historian knowledge and expertise about a wide variety of cultural resource laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and technologies affecting federal agency activities and operations in the related professional fields of anthropology, historic preservation, archaeology, cultural resources management, curation, or preservation planning. Lead, participate, facilitate, and communicate with the team and client on all critical stages of the NHPA consultation process and provide supervision, daily work direction, quality control, and oversight to the team on project deliverables. Conduct historic resources surveys and desktop reviews with associated travel. Oversee and manage the preparation of administrative records and prepare and monitor schedules, milestones, workload projections, and staffing needs to meet client requirements. Develop, organize, and host interactive webinars on natural and cultural resources topics with the public. Develop and facilitate dissemination of program outreach and communications material such as fact sheets, newsletters, and ArcGIS Story Maps. Due to the nature of work performed within this facility, U.S. citizenship is required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in cultural resources management, including identification and evaluation of historic buildings, developing historic contexts, or developing Determinations of Eligibility or National Register Nominations
  • Experience with federal agency historic preservation, including policies, principles, and application technologies
  • Experience with studies and analyses on new and emerging cultural resources management issues, challenges, technologies, and concerns
  • Experience with resource consultations, specifically cultural and historic, in support of NHPA Section 106, including drafting Section 106 documentation, correspondence, and closeout reports
  • Knowledge of NEPA, including executive orders, laws, regulations, and policies throughout the NEPA process
  • Ability and willingness to verbally host webinars twice a month for a public audience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements
  • Master's degree in Architectural History or Historic Preservation

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience with historic resource or archaeology surveys, and SHPO or THPO consultation
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement, including working with NGOs, community partners, and decision-makers
  • Ability to think critically as a project lead, multi-task, and work closely with a team to execute project activities under strict timelines or deadlines
  • Ability to write, edit, and format complex documents using Microsoft Word
  • Ability to use Microsoft SharePoint and Teams in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to analyze situations and make well-informed decisions
  • Ability to synthesize in-depth cultural resources topics and transform into easily digestible deliverables for both expert and non-expert consumption
  • Possession of excellent written and verbal communication skills

Salary at Booz Allen is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual's particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $60,400.00 to $137,000.00 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Booz Allen's total compensation package for employees.
