Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Navigation Center Dental Director assists students and faculty in all clinical aspects of patient care and treatment, and coordinates care in collaboration with other health care professionals and Navigation Center personnel. This teaching clinic will serve previously and currently homeless individuals in transition to permanent housing and a permanent dental home. There may also be occasion to care for incarcerated individuals at the neighboring Maple Street Correctional Center ( MSCC).

The position has an expected duration of no more than 4 years and is dependent upon continued availability of grant funding.
Essential Functions

  • Answer telephone and retrieve messages from voicemail; schedule patient appointments using the electronic health record system; confirm insurance and eligibility, collect information required for referrals.
  • Perform chairside assistant duties for faculty and students including four-handed dentistry.
  • Provide information regarding policies/procedures as they relate to scheduling, dental treatment, nature of the teaching clinic, available resources and financial obligations to patients, caregivers, and other providers
  • Create electronic patient records in with appropriate documentation to include medical history, physical results and consent for treatment.
  • Work with Clinic Director and Navigation Center personnel to order supplies; clean and maintain dental/hospital inventory and equipment.
  • Sterilize dental instruments and maintain strict infection control standards; instruct students on appropriate procedures and protocols and assist them as necessary to maintain strict compliance with standards.
  • Assist with and conduct Navigation Center and community public relations projects.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Dental Director or designee.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:

  • Dental terminology and treatments
  • Dental insurance billing procedures
  • Scheduling and care coordination an inter-disciplinary environment
  • Chairside dental assisting
  • Sterilization and infection control procedures
  • Medical emergency procedures including CPR
  • Coordinating referrals for specialty care and direct hand off to other providers
  • General office administration methods


Experience:

  • Minimum of one year increasing responsibility in a dental office or dental school to include chairside dental assisting.
  • Minimum of one year experience managing front office administrative duties.

Education/Licenses:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current California Radiation Safety Certification
  • California Board-approved 2-hour course in the California Dental Practice Act
  • California Board-approved 8-hour course in infection control

  • ASHI, AHA, or ARC-approved course in BLS or any other course approved by the board as equivalent which includes hands-on simulated clinical scenarios

Working Conditions:

  • Position is full-time, five (5) days per week, eight (8) hours per day.
  • Location will be at the Redwood City Navigation Center and occasionally at the neighboring Maple Street Correctional Center (MSCC).
  • Travel to the dental school may be required for calibration, cross training and other special events.

  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, patients and other health care providers

  • Work in a fast-paced environment and maintain professional composure and demeanor
  • Manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously
  • Work in non-traditional environments


Experience:

  • Experience in Medi-Cal billing strongly preferred
  • Experience using an electronic health record strongly preferred

Other:

  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Hiring Range $23.10 - $34.36 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
