Cornell Recreational Services offers a wide variety of fitness, wellness, sports and open recreation activities for Cornell students, staff, faculty, retirees and their spouses/partners. Through our broad-based programs, we strive to promote a healthy and holistic lifestyle throughout the campus community. The Cornell Fitness Centers operates five different fitness centers across campus, typically offers 95+ group fitness classes a week, and works with many of departments across campus to meet fitness and wellness needs for the Cornell University community.

The Associate Director of Fitness Operations is an incredible opportunity for a dynamic and creative facility operations professional to gain experience at a premier university fitness program. This position provides oversight for the various operational needs of the Cornell Fitness Centers, serving over 14,000 students, staff and faculty throughout five different fitness centers across campus. This role manages the recruitment, training and development for all student and temporary staff (approximately 200 total) that work in the fitness centers, and supervises professional staff that support this operation. In addition to scheduling and hiring, the Associate Director oversees personnel issues, including performance, payroll and operational adjustments. This position develops and maintains the policies and procedures related to staffing and facility operations.

Key success factors in this role include the ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail to allow the individual to successfully navigate the various management responsibilities of the position. A strong work ethic, with a resolve to be approachable, accessible and responsive to the multiple groups with which they interact with on a daily basis. The drive to create and maintain a work environment that increases student employee retention in a highly competitive setting is essential to this role.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Sports/Recreation/Fitness Management, Human Resource Management, or Communications with a strong emphasis in health and fitness required, with at least 2 years and up to 4 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current certification by American Red Cross in Adult CPR, AED and First Aid; American Red Cross Instructor Trainer certification within the first three months of employment is required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with RecTrac, Workday, Excel, PowerPoint, and When To Work program, or other similar databases.
  • Demonstrated experience with supervision of staff
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Proven experience connecting diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing practices to business goals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Sports/Recreation/Fitness Management, Human Resource Management, or Communications with a strong emphasis in health and fitness.
  • ARC Instructor certification for First Aid, CPR and AED.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring new employees, particularly in a college environment.
  • ACSM, AFAA, or other national certification in personal training preferred.
  • Strong preference for managerial experience in an adult or university recreation setting, with supervisory duties of 30 or more employees.
