HJF is seeking a Prevention Scientist II to develop and implement public health- and prevention-focused research projects for the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress, and primarily the National Guard Programs- Integrated Primary Prevention and Behavioral Health Programs. Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team focused on addressing prevention and behavioral health needs within the military. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific and systems/organizational principles to support the development of preventive efforts and behavioral health interventions. Collaborates on the development of project activities, researching complex public health or policy issues and supporting the development of possible solutions and policy recommendations. Identifies policy or research gaps, providing recommendations that are supported by empirical findings to advise stakeholders.

This position will be in support of Department of Psychiatry / Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress.

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) is one of the nation's oldest and most highly regarded, academic-based organizations dedicated to advancing trauma-informed knowledge, leadership and methodologies. The Center's work addresses a wide scope of trauma exposure from the consequences of combat, operations other than war, terrorism, natural and humanmade disasters, and public health threats as well as risk and protective factors associated with suicidal behaviors. CSTS is a part of our nation's federal medical school, Uniformed Services University (USU), and its Department of Psychiatry. These affiliations represent the Center's history, mission and future directions as a major contributor to our country's understanding of the impact of trauma and the advancement of trauma-informed care. The Department has active research programs in the Basic and Clinical Sciences and Neurosciences. In addition to intramural research projects, the Department maintains active research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Science Foundation, the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force. The department has ongoing collaborations with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, is sponsor of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress and provides psychiatry residency training through its affiliations with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center and Malcolm Grow Air Force Medical Center and the National Capital Area Graduate Medical Education Consortium.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Responsibilities

  • Plans, executes, and oversees applied public and behavioral health and prevention research efforts. Formulates hypotheses and designs research protocols.
  • Interprets, communicates, and translates scientific findings and implications for program stakeholders.
  • Monitors scientific literature and leads efforts to update the program teams on empirical research findings relevant to the programs' missions. Identifies emerging topics and gaps in relevant research. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • Develops research efforts that focus on fostering healthy climates, and mitigating risk and enhancing protective factors that inform policy, behavioral health assessment, preventive and postvention recommendations and practices.
  • Applies public health principles for data-informed decision-making to develop, implement, and evaluate prevention activities.
  • In collaboration with the program teams, develops prevention and behavioral health workforce models and training materials for strategic-level stakeholders that are informed by prevention science research.
  • Works with internal and external teams to incorporate current knowledge and empirical findings to the development of a wide range of knowledge products.
  • Collects and analyzes data focused on prevention efforts and resource needs to adapt, implement, and evaluate prevention activities.
  • Prepares research reports, creates briefing materials, and presents research findings to a variety of audiences, including senior leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinates and prepares new grant and funding applications.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Collaborates with professional staff and communicates regularly with program collaborators by representing the program and its scientific efforts. Trains and supervises technical staff.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral Degree required. Preference for degrees in Public Health, Applied Psychology, IO Psychology, Health psychology, Clinical Research, Social Work, Research Psychology, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Applicants must have evidence of a strong research background, as reflected by scholarly publications and/or presentations and previous work experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and an ability to troubleshoot day-to-day challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis, statistics, with the ability to analyze and use data to develop findings that inform policy and/or health recommendations
  • Knowledge of military mental health, military family mental health, and/or suicidology, with related clinical experience and practical experience working within organizations
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$120,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
