Come join Shannon & Wilson's southern California office in Burbank that includes a staff of 15 geotechnical engineers, geologists, and administrative support personnel. You'll be joining a cohesive and fun team with a diversity of experience and backgrounds, and you'll fill an important role within our office and 100% employee-owned firm. With a focus on transportation, federal, local municipalities/agencies, higher education, and water/wastewater projects, the southern California office has established a strong foothold in the region. As a growing office, we actively collaborate with other Shannon & Wilson offices throughout the country, by providing technical development and professional growth opportunities to our staff. Involvement in complex and challenging pursuits and projects is one of the many perks of working with our company. Responsibilities:

  • Perform field explorations, collection of samples, geologic reconnaissance, and mapping.
  • Perform geotechnical lab testing and communicate results.
  • Perform geologic hazards evaluations and geotechnical engineering analyses and calculations.
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering and other reports.
  • Perform construction observation and testing on job sites and prepare applicable documentation.
  • Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.
  • Support marketing activities, including preparation of cost proposals.
  • Follow Shannon & Wilson's Quality Assurance policy.
  • Follow and promote Shannon and Wilson's Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements

  • BS in Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology and MS or PhD Degree in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 0 - 6 years of experience in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Have obtained or in process of receiving an Engineer-in-Training Certificate.
  • On track to obtain Professional Engineering (PE) License.
  • Work experience (and/or coursework) in one or more of the following areas: soil mechanics; rock mechanics; rock and soil slope stability; shallow and deep foundations; tunneling and microtunneling; earthquake engineering; and earth retaining structures.
  • Some knowledge or experience of field/construction observation in one or more of the following areas: logging geotechnical explorations, observation of deep and/or shallow foundation construction, observations of earthwork activities, installation and recording of geotechnical instrumentation, field reconnaissance, and/or underground work.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work independently with the appropriate level of supervision and mentoring.
  • Valid driver license and insurable driving record.
  • Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel (required); gINT, SlopeW or Slide, Lpile, CPeT-IT (desirable).
  • Critical thinking and analysis.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying 30+ pounds.
  • Working in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain.
  • Willingness and ability to travel (drive or fly) to field sites per project needs and job sites locally and out of state.

Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, and other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, an Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineer typically would be placed at Shannon & Wilson Professional I, II, III, or IV level.

Salary range:

  • Professional II range: $80,000.00 - $87,500.00
  • Professional III range: $87,500.00 - $95,000.00
  • Professional IV range: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00
